The sculptures "Striding Horses" by the sculptor Josef Thorak (1889- 1952) from 1939 - packed opaque - will be brought into the exhibition rooms of the Stadtgeschichtliche Museen Spandau, which have been prepared for this purpose, from October 14, 2022. Thorak was one of Adolf Hitler's favorite artists and had been commissioned to create the horses as garden ornaments for the New Reich Chancellery in Berlin-Mitte. After their adventurous journey since 1943 via Wriezen and Eberswalde in Brandenburg as well as Bad Dürkheim in the Palatinate, the controversial propaganda art comes back to Berlin. One of the horses will be included in the exhibition "Unveiled. Berlin and its Monuments" and made accessible to the public as soon as all restoration and exhibition measures have been completed. For a few weeks, only the first six rooms will be open to visitors. The second horse will be moved to the Queen's Bastion, where a display depot will be set up with other arguable objects of commemorative culture.

Frank Bewig, District Councillor for Culture, commented:

"Since the opening of the exhibition "Unveiled", a center for scientific and museum-educational examination of "toxic" monuments has been developing sustainably at the Spandau Citadel, which is receiving international attention. The federal government's decision to include the Thorak horses in the cultural policy education program here is logical and a further contribution to the historical reappraisal of National Socialism, which is firmly anchored in our democracy."
